Shifter Bushing, '60 & up Type 1 & 3
Is your shifter super sloppy? One of the most overlooked things to upgrade in a VW is to replace the shifter bushing. This plastic bushing is located under the shifter, and guides the shift rod in and out of the bracket inside the tunnel. If it wears out, there is a lot of play in the shift rod, thus lots of slop. Replace it. It's cheap! Don't forget to order a new retainer clip to go along with it.
